Akino Sakaoka, Principal Designer

 

Akino moved her base to Nagasaki, Japan in October 2022. She started building her business in Japan as well while she still have clients in the US. 

Using her unique combination of over 20-plus years of experience as an interior designer in New York City and construction management skills, Akino manages the design of complex projects to create functional spaces with well-harmonized aesthetics. She also brings a wide range of expertise gained from a number of diverse projects in the New York City area, such as hospitality, residential, and corporate office design projects.

Akino is a New York City-certified Minority & Woman-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) owner.

During the pandemic from 2020 to 2022, she also worked as an interior design consultant for a US government agency, GSA. There, she took on a number of projects throughout New York City. She worked on the designs for IRS, FBI, SSA, SBA, U.S. Courts, U.S. Marshals Service, USCIS, U.S. Attorney, DOL, OSHA, WHD, USMUN, NOAA, EOIR, JFK, TSA, and federal historic buildings throughout New York City. She also held a position as a subject matter expert for accessible design and barrier-free design.

 

Among her specific accomplishments, in 2014, she served as the design consultant and construction manager for the New York City restaurant Shabu Shabu Kobe, a property owned by Kobe Bussan, owner of one of the largest supermarket chains, Gyomu Super in Japan. In addition, as interior design studio leader at Harris LeRoy Architecture from 2015 to 2018, she undertook designer/ project manager roles in multi-million dollar residential and commercial projects.

 

Prior to 2015, she worked as a designer/project architect at Rockwell Group, Mayer Davis, Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, TPG Architecture, and BRB Architects.

 

Akino Sakaoka has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in construction management from New York University, and she is a LEED Accredited Professional.
